ABSTRACTNazlah Oktavia Ramadani : “A Document-Based ESP Needs Analysis: A CaseStudy at SMK Negeri 6 Rejang Lebong”NIM : 22551037Advisor : Jumatul Hidayah, M.PdCo-advisor : Mely Fauziah, M.PdThis study examines the extent to which English for Specific Purposes (ESP)instruction at SMK Negeri 6 Rejang Lebong is aligned with the communicativedemands of vocational workplaces, through document analysis of three institutionaldocument types: English lesson plans (RPP), internship (PKL) assessmentinstruments, and student internship reports from five vocational programmes(LPKC, TKR, TSM, TAB, and TAV). The study employed a qualitative document-based case study design, triangulating the three document types to establish thetrustworthiness of its findings. The results show that none of the six work-orientedESP indicators was fully met in the RPP analysed, and the PKL assessmentinstrument contained no criterion addressing English communicative competencywhatsoever. In contrast, student PKL reports revealed considerable variation inpatterns of English language contact across vocational programmes, indicating thatthe ESP alignment gap is systemic and is consistently reproduced across threedistinct stages—instructional planning, field experience, and summativeevaluation—rather than attributable to student unpreparedness alone. Thesefindings underscore the need to revisit lesson planning and internship assessmentinstruments to better align them with the communicative demands of vocationalworkplaces.Keywords: ESP, needs analysis, document analysis, internship, vocationalschool, ESP alignment
