Abstract

This study aimed to identify the strategies used by male and female English teachers in motivating elementary students in learning English and to investigate students’ motivation under the strategies implemented by both teachers. This study employed a mixed-methods research design. The participants were one male English teacher, one female English teacher, and fifty-five sixth-grade students at SDUA Taman Harapan Curup. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and questionnaires and analyzed using qualitative and quantitative approaches. The findings showed that both teachers implemented various strategies in motivating students, although they applied different strategies according to their teaching styles and classroom management practices. The findings also revealed that students in both classes demonstrated a high level of learning motivation under the strategies implemented by both teachers. The highest mean scores were obtained by the Diligent in Facing the Tasks indicator, with 178.50 in the male teacher’s class and 182.00 in the female teacher’s class, indicating students’ strong willingness to complete learning tasks. Meanwhile, the lowest mean scores were obtained by the Defending Opinions indicator, with 137.00 in the male teacher’s class and 143.00 in the female teacher’s class, indicating that students still needed more opportunities and confidence to express their ideas. Overall, the findings do not indicate that one teacher was more effective than the other; rather, both teachers were able to maintain students’ learning motivation through different approaches.
