Abstract

ABSTRACT REZA RUKMANA PUTRI, NIM 20551054. “English Teachers' Experiences and Challenges in Integrating Generative AI at SMPN 3 Rejang Lebong: A Qualitative Exploration‟‟ The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology requires English language teachers to continuously adapt to digital instructional innovations. This study aimed to explore English teachers’ experiences and challenges in integrating Generative AI in English Language Teaching (ELT) at SMPN 3 Rejang Lebong. A qualitative descriptive research design was employed, involving three English teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s interactive model grounded in Davis’s Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Ertmer’s barrier framework. The findings reveal that teachers held positive perceptions regarding the usefulness and ease of use of AI, noting time efficiency in lesson preparation, enhanced written feedback, and increased student classroom engagement. Main implementation challenges included first-order external barriers namely limited classroom technology infrastructure and a lack of formal professional training as well as second-order internal barriers, such as concerns over student overdependence and academic integrity. The study concludes that while AI tools significantly support instructional efficiency and language exposure, successful integration depends on upgrading school infrastructure, providing targeted teacher training, and establishing clear pedagogical guidelines to prevent student overreliance.
