Abstract

ABSTRACT Stefhanie Putri Cusa Gempar : NIM : Advisor : Co-Advisor : Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) is a common problem experienced by students learning English as a foreign language, especially during the first semester of university. This study aimed to identify the language skill that causes the highest anxiety among first-semester students of the English Tadris Study Program at IAIN Curup and to find the main factors causing that anxiety. This research used a quantitative descriptive method. The participants were 59 firstsemester students selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a 49- item questionnaire covering speaking, listening, reading, and writing anxiety. The data were analyzed using mean scores and frequency distributions. The results showed that speaking was the skill with the highest anxiety level (M = 2.83), followed by listening (M = 2.82), reading (M = 2.44), and writing (M = 2.28). The main factor causing speaking anxiety was linguistic competence concerns (M = 2.99), including worries about vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The findings indicate that first-semester students feel most anxious when speaking English because they are afraid of making language mistakes. This study suggests that lecturers should provide supportive classroom activities and more speaking practice to help students reduce anxiety and improve their English communication skills.
