Abstract

This study conducts a qualitative content analysis of three official Senior High School English textbooks under the Merdeka Curriculum: Work in Progress (Grade X), English for Change (Grade XI), and Life Today (Grade XII). The primary objective was to investigate the representation of language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and the patterns of single and integrated skill activities within these textbooks. The research utilized a fifteen-category coding framework, developed based on Brown and Lee's theory of language skills and Oxford's integrated language skills concept, to systematically analyze all learning activities. The findings indicate that language skills are predominantly represented through integrated language-skill activities rather than isolated skills across all three textbooks. While Work in Progress and English for Change primarily focused on a limited range of integrated-skill combinations, Life Today demonstrated the most comprehensive representation, incorporating all fifteen coding categories, including single-skill activities alongside two, three, and four-skill integrations. Reading and writing activities were found to be the most dominant, suggesting a literacy-oriented approach. The study concludes that while the textbooks generally align with the Merdeka Curriculum's emphasis on integrated language learning, there is an uneven distribution, with listening and speaking skills being less frequently represented as stand-alone activities. These results highlight the need for a more balanced representation of all four language skills in future textbook development to enhance students' communicative competence.
