Abstract
This study investigates EFL students’ perceptions and perceived challenges in using ChatGPT for writing-based tasks in the Pragmatics course at the English Tadris Study Program of IAIN Curup. A descriptive qualitative design was employed, with data collected through two sets of questionnaires. The first questionnaire explored students’ perceptions, while the second examined the challenges they encountered. The findings show that the majority of students hold positive perceptions of ChatGPT, recognizing its usefulness in improving grammar, vocabulary, sentence coherence, and overall writing quality. Students also reported increased motivation, confidence, and engagement, with many expressing high satisfaction and strong intentions to continue using the tool. However, several challenges were identified. These include overdependence on ChatGPT, reduced originality and critical thinking, limited accuracy in assessing pragmatic aspects of writing, technological barriers, data privacy concerns, and a lack of institutional readiness to support AI integration. In conclusion, ChatGPT is perceived as a valuable support tool for EFL writing tasks, but its effective use requires careful guidance, infrastructure support, and ethical considerations to maximize its educational benefits.
