Abstract

Kuda Kepang is a highly respected form of traditional art, and it can be assumed that most people in Rejang Lebong and Bengkulu are already familiar with this performance. The Kuda Kepang dance is still thriving in various community organizations, particularly in Rejang Lebong Regency. Kuda Kepang is a type of dance performed by riding a horse made of woven bamboo (kepang). This art form is typically accompanied by a unique and straightforward melody, as it is a folk performance that uses traditional musical instruments such as Gong, Kenong, Kendang, and Slompret. This research aims to explore the role of Kuda Kepang in wedding celebrations and the perspective of NU (Nahdlatul Ulama) scholars in Rejang Lebong regarding this art form when performed at weddings. The research results indicate that the Kuda Kepang dance, which emerged in the 19th century, has a rich history with various versions regarding its origins. Generally, this dance is seen as a form of appreciation and support from the common people towards the cavalry forces fighting against the Dutch colonizers. The Kuda Kepang art is held depending on residents who want to celebrate major events or hold festivities, such as the birth of a baby, circumcision, and weddings. However, the Kuda Kepang dance is most often performed at wedding parties. The view of the NU Rejang Lebong scholars on the Kuda Kepang art is that it is permissible or allowed, but it becomes forbidden when mixed with things that contradict Islamic law, such as shirk or cooperation with the supernatural.
