Abstract

This study aims to investigate the teachers' conceptions of alternative assessment in English teaching skills at SMA N Jayaloka as well as the strategies of alternative assessment used by English teachers. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was obtained through semi-structured interviews and an observation checklist of English teachers at SMA N Jayaloka. The respondents in this study were teachers who taught English at SMA N Jayaloka. In SMA N Jayaloka two teachers are using alternative assessments in English teaching skills and taught in ten and eleven grades. The results of the research showed that English teachers at SMA N Jayaloka have four conceptions there is the conception of improvement, the conception of school accountability, conception of student accountability, and beyond theory conception of curriculum alignment. Meanwhile, there are two strategies used by teachers peer assessment and apply it with information communication technelogy and group assessment, and the teachers did not apply specific strategies, but the learning strategies used by teachers were adjusted according to the needs of students and the existing situation and the teachers did not apply specific conception. This research is insufficient to generalize the issue of conception and practice of assessment and further and deeper exploration in the field is needed to address and apply all the strategies in the right way for improving learning and teaching.
