Abstract

This exploratory sequential research aimed to investigate the impact of ice-breaker activities on students' self-confidence in speaking at SMP IT Rabbi Radhiy-yah. The study involved three English teachers who incorporated icebreakers into their classes and their respective students. Data were collected using interview guides, observation checklists, and questionnaires. Qualitative data were analyzed using Creswell's analytical framework, while quantitative data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis with a five-point Likert scale. The findings reveal that all types of icebreakers, except one, were implemented by the teachers, with clapping and counting being the most common activities. Icebreakers were perceived as valuable supporting activities, and their implementation was tailored to students’ needs. The effectiveness of icebreakers varied by gender, with female students show-ing greater interest than male students. Students agreed that icebreakers have a strong influence on enhancing self-confidence in speaking, with average percentage im-provements of 71.10% for male students and 75.07% for female students. Male stu-dents predominantly had neutral responses, while female students primarily respond-ed with agreement. The research indicates that teachers engage students with ice-breakers, which positively influence students' self-confidence in speaking.
