Abstract

Interfaith marriage is a source of problems in the household for a Muslim or maybe even among non-Muslims themselves and if this has actually been done then the victim is the child who is most likely confused in determining his religion. This research discusses Surah Al-Maidah verse 5 which allows Muslim men to marry ahl-al-Kitab women, where in Indonesia there is a prohibition on the Islamic Law Compilation article 40 c that Muslim men are not allowed to marry women who are not Muslim. This is of course a problem for society, where the majority of Indonesian people are Muslim. With the occurrence of this social dynamic, accompanied by questions from the community about its ability, the ulama who are members of the Indonesian ulama council then tried to provide religious arguments to provide legal certainty in this case. In its fatw, MUI stated on various grounds that interfaith marriage is absolutely haram. Therefore, the writer analyzes the comparison between theological and sociological understanding of interfaith marriage. The research method used is to use descriptive analysis research methods derived from primary and secondary data sources. Data collection is obtained through literature study which is then analyzed qualitatively and normatively. According to the author's analysis, it is permissible for a Muslim man to marry a woman from Ahl al-Kitab because the husband has leadership responsibility for the wife, and has the authority and function of directing the family and their children. But in this case, there is much to be considered and considered in implementing it, because this is only intended for Muslim men who are strong in faith, able to show Islamic perfection, Islamic nobility and ability to carry out the mission of da'wah, so that the woman Ahl al-Kitab is interested. with Islamic teachings and at the same time embracing Islam with full awareness. But if his faith is weak and he is worried that his faith will be eroded and will result in apostasy, then it is haram to marry a woman who is Ahl al-Kitab.
