Abstract

This research was focused on the thematic progression patternt in writing paragraph of students at Fourth semester at IAIN CURUP. This research objectives were to find out the pattern of thematic progression of student in writing paragraph. It purpose to know which Thematic Progression pattern is widely used in the student’s writing of Paragraph. This research is Qualitative research which is presented in the Analysis. Subject of the research are 15 students of the fourth semester at IAIN CURUP Consist of 5 male and 10 female students. The technique for collecting data was Document Analysis. In analysis of data, The steps were: Read the text of the writting paragraph by students four semester at IAIN Curup especially class B, classifying the Theme and the Rheme of thematic progression that they used in writing paragraph, identifying the types of Theme and Rheme of each clause in each paragraph and making conclusions about the results of the analysis. The result showed: The first pattern most widely used by 4B students is a constant pattern which amounts to 45 clauses, The second theme is Linier theme pattern which amounts to 17 clauses, the third type of thematic development identified is Derived which amounts to 5 clauses,And the last is split theme pattern which amounts to 4 clauses. The results show that the Thematic progression pattern that is widely used by student of 4B / 2017 is the pattern of constant theme.
