Abstract

Al-Qur'an is the word of Allah, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel. Al-Qur'an with its majesty has given birth to the largest peradap in the world as the main mission of the Al-Qur'an is to make people character and knowledge knowledge. Al-Qur'an provides guidance about the ideal society, as in Al-Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah verse 143. So the main point in this thesis research is to describe the interpretation of Sayyid Quthb, Ath-Tabari and Ibn Katsir with the aim to find out the interpretation and the concept of ummatan wasatan according to the three commentaries. This research is included in library research, which is collecting data through reading, commentaries and literature that have relevance to the research title. This study uses a comparative method (muqaran). Muqaran method is the process of interpretation by comparing verses of the Al-Qur'an that have similarities or similarities to editors who talk about different problems or cases so that it will be known why Sayyid Quthb, Ath-Thabari and Ibn Katsir interpreted the ummatan wasatan with the chosen people and people who are balanced with everything. Sayyid Qutb interpreted the ummatan wasatan as an chosen people who will be the upholders of justice and balance between humans, with this balance will be able to increase the height of quality of life. Thabari interprets the observance of society with a balanced society, which has the nature of being in the midst of two extreme poles, namely an excessive tendency to the interests of the world (physical needs) as well as a tendency to totally confine oneself from worldly matters. Ibn Katsir interprets the ummatan wasatan as the chosen, the best and most just people because they will be witnesses to the actions of humans or other people that each Apostle has conveyed the message to his people.
