Abstract

TikTok has become one of the most popular social media platforms used by university students to communicate and express themselves. As English Tadris students are expected to use English effectively, it is important to understand how they use English vocabulary in their TikTok communication. This study aimed to identify the types of English vocabulary used by students of the English Tadris Study Program at IAIN Curup and to examine the communicative contexts in which the vocabulary was used. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The data were collected through document analysis of students’ TikTok captions and comments posted from 13 May to 17 June 2026. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings showed that the students used four main types of English vocabulary: academic words, informal expressions, slang, and borrowed words, while no code-mixing was found The word or phrase is commonly used in casual, everyday communication. It creates a friendly or conversational tone and is easily understood by general speakers. It is not restricted to a particular social group.The study concludes that TikTok provides an authentic environment for English Tadris students to use English vocabulary meaningfully and appropriately according to different communicative purposes.
