Abstract
ABSTRACT Aisyah Nurhidayah : Identifying the Obstacles Faced by English Department Students in Translating Academic Texts and Their Strategies NIM : 22551004 Advisor : Dr. Sakut Anshori, M.Hum Co-Advisor : Meli Fauziah, M.Pd. Translating academic texts is a challenging activity for English Department students, as it requires not only language proficiency but also the ability to understand meaning, context, and disciplinespecific terminology accurately. This assumption is supported by a preliminary observation conducted by the researcher prior to this study, in which several students at IAIN Curup admitted that they frequently encountered difficulties when translating academic texts. This study aims to identify the obstacles faced by English Department students at IAIN Curup in translating academic texts and to analyze the strategies they employ to overcome those obstacles. This study used a qualitative approach specifically a case study design, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The interview data were used to identify the strategies employed by the students, while the document analysis was conducted on the students' translation assignments to identify the obstacles concretely reflected in their translation outputs. The participants consisted of twelve sixth-semester students of the English Tadris Study Program at IAIN Curup, selected through purposive sampling based on data saturation. The findings reveal that students encountered five categories of obstacles, namely Vocabulary Difficulties, Grammatical Difficulty, Meaning and Contextual Understanding, Equivalence and Meaning Transfer, and Academic Text Complexity, with Vocabulary Difficulties emerging as the most frequently observed obstacle in the students' translation documents. To overcome these obstacles, students employed eight strategies, namely Use of Dictionaries, Rereading and Paraphrasing Strategy, Peer Discussion, Use of Machine Translation Strategically, Checking and Revising Machine Translation Result, Comparing Machine Translation Result with Own Understanding, Translation Process Management, and Segmented Translation, with Rereading and Paraphrasing Strategy identified as the most dominant strategy applied by the majority of respondents. These findings suggest that translation instruction should adopt a more integrated approach that explicitly addresses how vocabulary, grammatical, and meaning-related obstacles interact within academic texts, while also cultivating students' critical machine-translation literacy given the increasingly dominant role of technology-assisted strategies in students' actual translation practice.
