Abstract

ABSTRACT Dwiki Farhan Hafizh : The Influence of AI on the Learning Habits of English Tadris Study Program Students. Advisor : Dr. Prihantoro M.Pd Co-Advisor : Meli Fauziah M.Pd The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT and Claude has become deeply embedded in university students' academic routines, with many treating these tools as a first step in completing coursework rather than as a supporting resource. This study investigates AI's influence on the learning habits of English Tadris Study Program students at IAIN Curup, employing a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. It involved 45 fourth-semester students who completed a questionnaire on their AI usage patterns, motivations, and habit changes, followed by semi-structured interviews with five students selected through extreme case sampling to elaborate on the quantitative findings. The findings reveal that students extensively integrate AI into their academic routines, primarily for summarizing, paraphrasing, and grammar checking, with Claude and ChatGPT being the most preferred tools. Students are motivated by instant feedback, academic deadlines, and the psychological safety of a judgment-free environment. While AI has fostered positive habits such as post-task verification, structured planning, and adaptive help-seeking, it has also contributed to negative transformations, including an AI-first instinct, increased procrastination, reduced collaboration, and declining self-editing. This impact is not uniform: negative transformations are concentrated among students who rely heavily and uncritically on AI, while selective users maintain more balanced academic behaviors. The study contributes a comprehensive understanding of how AI simultaneously supports and undermines independent learning in the Indonesian EFL context, offering practical insights for students and educators to foster critical AI literacy.
