Abstract
ABSTRACT Nafisah Kamal : A Quantitative Analysis of English Questions Intonation Accuracy: A Study on English Education Students of IAIN Curup from the Rejang Tribe Advisor : Dr. Leffi Noviyenty, M.Pd. Co-Advisor : Dr. Prihantoro, SS., M.Pd. L1 phonological interference in English intonation is a common challenge among EFL learners, particularly speakers of syllable-timed regional languages such as Rejang. This study analyzes the accuracy of English question intonation produced by Rejang-speaking English Education students at IAIN Curup and measures the extent of L1 phonological interference. A descriptive quantitative approach was used, with data collected through two instruments: a Reading Aloud Task (RA) and a Discourse Completion Task (DCT). Twenty students were selected via purposive sampling. Recordings were analyzed using Praat to extract F0 values and identify pitch contour patterns (Rising, Flat, or Falling). Of 800 utterances analyzed, the overall intonation accuracy rate was 76.0%, with an L1 interference level of 24.0%, categorized as Low. The dominant patterns were Rising for Yes/No questions (78.0%) and Falling for WH-questions (75.0%), consistent with standard English norms. A paired sample t-test showed no significant difference between RA and DCT performance (p > .05), indicating stable intonation ability across speech contexts. The study concludes that Rejang-speaking English Education students at IAIN Curup demonstrate good English question intonation accuracy despite lowlevel L1 interference, informing more contextually responsive pronunciation instruction for EFL learners with regional language backgrounds.
