Abstract

ABSTRACT Lova Novriati :Exploring Students’ Usage of ChatGPT to Enhance Students’ Understanding and Analyzing of Printed Instrucional Materials in English Tadris Study Program IAIN Curup” NIM : 22551024 Advisor : Jumatul Hidayah, M.Pd Co-advisor : Sarwo Edy, M.Pd This research explores students’ use of ChatGPT to enhance their understanding and analyzing of printed instructional materials in the English Tadris Study Program at IAIN Curup. This study aims to investigate how students use ChatGPT to assist their cognitive processes while engaging with academic reading materilas. A qualitative design with descriptive approach was employed. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis of students’ ChatGPT interaction histories. The participants were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of eighth-semester students who had completed the Critical Reading course and had experience using ChatGPT in academic reading. The findings reveal that students used ChatGPT to assist both understanding and analyzing printed instructional materials. In understanding ChatGPT helped students selecting process, organizing process, and integrating process. In analyzing, ChatGPT assisted students in deep organizational processing, integrative comparative process, active cognitive process, and cognitive load regulation. the study also identified several additional findings, including the use of ChatGPT to support classroom presentations, real-time analytical responses, time-efficient learning, and independent learning. Overall, the findings indicate that ChatGPT functioned as a cognitive support tool that enhanced students’ engagement with printed instructional materials. Rather than replacing students’ reading and thinking processes, ChatGPT served as a learning aid that supported understanding and higher-order analytical thinking when used critically and responsibly.
